What is IBS?
What is IBS?
Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a group of symptoms that affect your digestive system. It’s a common but uncomfortable gastrointestinal disorder. People with IBS get excessive gas, abdominal pain and cramps.
IBS can occur anywhere along the six feet of our colon. Which is divided into three distinct sections; the ascending, transverse colon, and the descending colon. The last foot or so of our descending colon is called the sigmoid colon. Most of the symptoms related to IBS seem to occur in the sigmoid colon, but they can occur anywhere inside the colon. See photo below.
Often, people with IBS have normal bowel movements some days and abnormal ones on other days. The type of IBS you have depends on the abnormal bowel movements you experience:
IBS with constipation, most of your poop is hard and lumpy.
IBS with diarrhea, most of your poop is loose and watery.
IBS with mixed bowel habits, you have both hard and lumpy bowel movements and loose and watery movements on the same day.
Most IBS sufferers report a tendency to bounce back and forth between the extremes of constipation and frequent, urgent, loose, irregular bowel movements; with or without occasional, or chronic diarrhea. IBS symptoms can be mild, moderate, severe or extreme. Other symptoms include:
